Q :

okay, so I read a comment saying that the items that are handmade and being shipped are shipped in a really bad quality and that it's not worth the money. I just wanted to know is there a way to get a refund? Also a lot of customers are blaming etsy that they do not respond to emails...

A :

I believe this depends on each seller. Etsy is simply a platform for sellers, and often does not have any direct involvement with orders short of processing the payment. Certain items cannot be returned for safety and hygiene reasons, and sellers can refuse to do anything other than exchange. Contacting Etsy may or may not change the results.

I hate Etsy! I am falling in debt because I quit my day job to be a full time seller! They shut my site down multiple tries, and has banned me forever! I am a single mom with no back up or resourse for income. They shut me down becuase an account that was somehow linked to mine broke the policy of items not being handmade! Not fair and this came with no warning. I emailed Etsy several times. No answer. I HATE THEM AND I HOPE THEY DIE!

Q :

Why does Etsy want so much of my personal financial information when I work through paypal?

A :

I have bought a number of items through Etsy and with great success. I had only one negative experience and Etsy took are of that. I recommend Etsy wholeheartedly.

I am no sure why this would be the case. I have only paid through paypal and have never been asked personal financial information beyond paypal. It is odd that you have experienced this issue. What personal financial information have you been asked to divulge?

Q :

Hi I have just ordered an item from etsy. This is my first time and I wanted to know how reliable the sellers are

A :

If you do, I would be cautious about ordering from international sellers, use a credit card in case you need to contest the charges, and do NOT expect ETSY do a thing if you get ripped off. They are useless and could care less once the sale is final.

If the individual seller is honest and does good work, you'll have no problem. However, if there is an issue with your order, don't expect any help from Etsy. In my experience, they support and protect disreputable vendors at the expense of honest buyers. I'll never use Etsy again.

Q :

How do I know my chosen seller is trustworthy?

A :

Thank you. I'm now deciding not to order from a company in India that started in 2020, no reviews and the same pics on the site are the same from Anthropologie...

I am a seller and i can tell you you should not only look from the amount of how many sales they make as so many of sellers using expensive marketing to boost their sales number, if it shows like more than 500-1000 but they just opened it last year it most likely are fake. If the item too cheap to be true, they are not handmade or they bought it somewhere and sell it on Etsy. It's happened to me that sellers from eastern europe and russia stolen my picture and design and sell it on etsy. Just buy local.

Etsy removes negative comments and also removes the ability to leave a review many times when there has been a dispute. I've experienced it 2x.

Q :

Yes. I bought a shirt for my daughter oct 29 and am still waiting for it. Seller keeps telling me her grandmother is near dying and cant get it out to me and it was scheduled to be shipped out 2 days ago and now she is telling me to wait some more.

A :

If you want to wait go ahead but you need to know that etsys policies state that there is a time limit on filing a complaint and after that time period of you have not received your item or requested assistance from headquarters, you are out of luck and your money.

A :

Most sellers on Etsy are good people and sometimes there are things that happen beyond their control. If you are worried about the shirt and would like to order it elsewhere than ask for a refund and cancellation on the order.

Etsy is a small band of folks selling small items from many artists. The small band does not seem to have an understanding of basic business principles and the artists vary like snowflakes, some have business sense, some do not. I like to compare Etsy to Amazon without the accountability, ethics or common business sense. The quality of what you buy and the service that is offered to you is dependent upon the individual artist with whom you deal. The small band will offer you no help. In this case, I would not say that the person is lying about a dying grandparent. The artist may have good intentions but since he/she is not business-aware and when she/he thought about selling things on Etsy, he/she saw a lifeline for her/his art and not the work it would take to maintain a business, they are clueless. Everyone who shops on Etsy should know this. What you get depends entirely on luck. And, as with any type of gambling, the odds heavily favor the house. As I see it, you have two options: 1) If you really want the item and it is practical to do so, wait and see if it arrives as ordered and 2) Cancel your order and demand repayment. I do not know that you will get the refund, but it is worth a shot.

Q :

Is my direct deposit information safe as a seller on Etsy?

A :

Yes, it certainly is. I've also been selling for many years, never had a problem. Using PayPal is great if you ever should have a problem, as you're protected in the event of theft. If you were hacked somehow would be the only way it would be a concern for me, so I am careful about using good passwords and changing them often (Etsy password) I would not worry about the safety of Etsy direct at all.

Q :

My son wants to sell his woodworking on esty, but I'm unsure on how to set up. He doesn't have a credit card, can a parent use their card for his shop? The registration requested a bank account. Does he need to set up a business checking account? How does he get paid for what he sells?

A :

Etsy has a ton of helpful information on setting up shop. I'm not sure if under 18 can have a shop but probably need parents to set it up with credit card and bank account. You get paid in your etsy seller account if a buyer uses "direct" checkout, otherwise through PayPal using their credit card. You have access to PayPal funds and can transfer that to your linked bank account. Funds paid using checkout through etsy is sent to your bank account every Monday. Best bet is read through the forums on etsy and ask lots of questions. Also, read the help etsy offers or email support if needed.

Depends upon how old he is, you may legally have to be over it for him to sell there. Pay is direct deposited into the account you choose(normally every monday), or through paypal untamedrose.etsy.com

Business checking isn't necessary (the banks now charge a monthly fee for a small business checking). You can pretty much set up a regular checking account

Answer This Question

Q :

Are the products authentic on etsy?

A :

There are many handmade items on Etsy. Sadly, resellers have saturated the etsy marketplace and given it a bad name. Like above, do your research, ask questions of sellers you're interested in buying from, check their feedback. See how long they've been selling. Believe it or not, there are still a large number of them putting out very nice handmade items.

A :

Some of the items on etsy.com are authentic BUT MANY ARE NOT. etsy.com CONCERNS: 1. ~80% of etsy's business is repeat customers yet a close friend of mine was banned by their "market integrity" department for reporting numerous incidences of counterfeit or trademark infringement (Channel, LV, Hermes, etc) merchandise. Ironically until this time, my friend was a long term and loyal etsy buyer. It appears that every counterfeit seller who gets kicked off eBay.com finds a welcome home on etsy. 2. A lot of etsy sellers have abandoned selling on etsy and moved to eBay, com based on website exposure, supposed abusive management and selling structures / fees. 3. etsy has no on-line support / help desk for buyer questions or issue resolution. You can send an email to etsy and MAYBE they will email you back. 4. etsy is resource / overhead heavy with no obvious end user awareness/visibility as to WHAT function these resources actually perform. 5. If you think eBay is bad, etsy is 100% worse from ALL perspectives, IMO. 5. etsy current on-line web survey results has a rating of around ~50%. We all know that most of what you read on the internet may or may not be true but some the stories shared by both buyers and sellers on etsy will render one speechless. Stay clear. etsy.com is BAD NEWS!

Q :

Hi, I just found the etsy website n was curious if anyone knew from experience how etsy WALLSKINS r...?

A :

@Jeanne: using a credit card for Etsy purchases is the safest way to go. If you're unhappy with the quality of the item purchased, you just start a dispute with your credit card, aka chargeback. This will produce instant results, Etsy (or PayPal) will step aside and watch from the sidelines as your credit card returns your money.

I am agree with Ramina. 90% is not hand made. All comes from Factories. When someone has over 8000's item don't you ask who made it. They are all over from Pakistan to turkey east to west up united state. Etsy is happy just to take your money and every 4 or 5 months closing one store to show off and if you have some money as a credit they take it too. No customer service, no respect no manor, they made policy just for FUN and they have FUN with our pocket. Stay far from them FAR FAR.

About 90% of what is on etsy is not handmade. Since 2013 etsy started allowing China, India and other slave labor countries to set up shops of 'handmade' items without questioning how the items were hand made.
